Vinous 88 points - Good bright, deep red. Dark berries and black cherry on the nose, complemented by musky mocha, roast coffee, exotic spices and smoked meat; I might have guessed this had a bit of Syrah in it. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, showing a lightly saline complexity to its dark berry and smoky, spicy oak flavors. Finishes with sweet tannins and good persistence. Comes across as considerably riper than the basic 2012 Malbec, but without quite that wine’s energy. In a rather old-fashioned style.
The grapes for the Reserva Malbec are sourced primarily from the higher altitude vineyard sites and from vineyards producing yields of only 2.7 tons per acre. The wine’s time spent in French oak during aging provides accentuated balance and flavor elegance.
|Pair with grilled meats or tagliatelle with spicy tomato sauce.
